Child Nutrition is pleased to announce Columbus Elementary is one of eleven schools awarded the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant for the 2010-2011 school year.
This is the first year for them to receive the grant. It will allow students to receive fresh fruits and vegetables as an afternoon snack three to four times per week throughout the school year.
Students will experience such unusual produce as edamame, pluots and star fruit. The grant also includes nutrition education classes focusing on specific types of fruits and vegetables (cucurbits and cruciferous, stems, roots and leaves) as well as vitamins, and minerals.
These classes incorporate learning with fun facts, stories, and activities to aide children in applying nutrition to their everyday life.
Programs such as Farm to Market will allow hands on interaction in Oklahoma Agriculture for students in an effort to encourage them to make healthier eating decisions.
